ContributorNetwork – COMMENTARY | President Obama’s plan for a leaner military will increase the nation’s dependence on direct diplomacy in the Middle East. Obama asserted his intention to limit the Defense Department’s role in future conflicts abroad with his proposed $400 billion in defense savings over 12 years. While Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell was quoted in NationalJournal.com saying that existing defense policies remain paramount and the cuts are “not just a math exercise,” the Department of Defense must rethink its strategy surrounding current threats to national security.
