President Obama’s Autopen on the Hot Seat (ContributorNetwork) – 1751th Edition

ContributorNetwork – Half a world away, with legislation requiring a signature, Thursday evening, President Barack Obama did what any leader of the world’s only superpower would do. He signed the bill with an autopen. Since the 1800s, presidents have used autopens to sign Christmas cards and other White House correspondence, but Thursday’s use of the autopen to sign a bill to extend some provisions of the Patriot Act that would have otherwise lapsed on Friday, under instruction of the president, is unusual at best, and according to Republican Congressman Tom Graves, a dangerous precedent. The Georgia congressman, of course, voted against the passage of the extension.
